Big Brothers Big Sisters
I have been a mentor since March 2014. My little and I get together 3-4 times per month and have developed a wonderful friendship. We love to swim, cook, craft, read, and just hang out together and talk. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties is a wonderful organization which "makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country". ASCEND
The local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha hosts a program which targets high school boys and girls in order to promote college and career readiness. ASCEND components include Model UN, HBCUs and STEM. I was invited in 2015 & 2016 to lead the students in STEM lessons. I was able to lead students in projects to discover STEM careers they had never heard of before, research potential careers which they were interested in learning more about, and using technology to create videos which shared what they learned about their career topic. It is a rewarding project which allowed me to get to know some really great kids and work with them on a fun project to help them discover possibilities for their future.
All About STEM
The St. Lucie County Library System is dedicated to providing opportunities for children to learn and grow and become better prepared for college. I am working with the children's services department on planning and developing STEM based learning opportunities for kids and teens. I am researching potential resources and models which could be adapted locally to serve the community. Check out the All About STEM LibGuide: http://irsc.libguides.com/AllAboutStem
